The Surgeon and the Night Before the Big Day

Once it had been decided that Dante needed bilateral (two) TPLO knee surgery, it was a pretty fast process.

We booked in for a consult with Dr. Colin at Guardian Vet Center, a state of the art emergency facility in Edmonton. These guys are the bees knees. I like going there because there are always so many cool pets.

When we were in the waiting room a Conservation Officer was picked up a wounded pigeon. Supposedly, this is a common thing. He already had a pheasant in his truck.

Dr. Colin is a nice man, he belongs in Grey's Anatomy Pets Edition. He would fit in well with McDreamy and McSteamy.

He came into the room we were waiting in, felt Dante's knees. Typed on his computer for like 10 minutes. Very thoroughly explain the surgery to me, including what would happen, what we would need to do, the risks, how common it was and the recovery. He had had to do this same bilateral TPLO on his own dog before she was 18 months old.

There is pretty much a less than 5% chance of infection, bent plates or popped screws. Those are odds we could live with.

I felt comfortable with this man cutting Dante open, he knew what he was doing, a very large portion of the surgeries he does are exactly the same. He said he could do it tomorrow.

Less that a week later, we were ready to go. Dante was in pain, and only causing more damage to himself with every day.

Dante should regain full range of motion after the surgery, but depending on the wearing down of the top bone he will have arthritis. Dogs get arthritis one way or another when they get old, that's just life.

The night before the surgery we told Dante he was going in. I could tell he was nervous, but excited as he knew he was in pain. We cuddled him extra and gave him wet dog food. He was all about it.
